Current Research Project

Firm-level Capability Development Under Global Value Chain Framework

Global value chains can be perceived as a vehicle where the concerned parties involved in a particular chain commit different types of tangible and intangible resources and capabilities. Some of these resources and capabilities provide the parties with entry qualification to a particular chain, while others enable the parties to upgrade their position. While some of these resources maybe endowments, others may grow throughthe process of learning and interactions; for example, through the framework of the commodity chain the parties are exposed to, including the different technological and managerial standards as well as cultural values and norms. Adoption and adaptationof technological, managerial, and cultural knowledge are the most expected benefit of global commodity chain apart from its quick economic benefits. Accordingly, Noor Un Nabi’s research project looks into how purposeful migration by educated people to knowledge - and technology-rich countries for higher education and employment change their endowments of human and social capital. When such people return from the knowledge- and technology-rich countries and become involved in entrepreneurship and management, do their foreign exposures contribute any differently in internationalizing – entry and upgrading in their respective value chains – their firm?
